There are four A+ exams and areas of study, but you only have to get your exams in 2 of them for qualification purposes. This is why many educational establishments only offer 2 paths. However, training you in all four will equip you with a far deeper level of understanding of your subject, which you’ll come to realise is a Godsend in the working environment.

A+ computer training courses cover fault-finding and diagnostics - via hands on and remote access, alongside building, fixing, repairing and understanding antistatic conditions.

You may also want to think about adding Network+ training to your A+ as it will give you the knowledge to work with networks, which is where the bigger salaries are.

An advisor that doesn’t question you thoroughly - the likelihood is they’re just trying to sell you something. If they’re pushing towards a particular product before learning about your history and current experience level, then you know you’re being sold to.

Sometimes, the starting point of study for a person experienced in some areas can be massively different to someone without.

If this is your initial effort at an IT exam then you may want to start with a user-skills course first.

You should remember: a training itself or the accreditation isn’t what this is about; the particular job that you’re getting the training for is. Many trainers unfortunately put too much weight in the qualification itself.

It’s an awful thing, but a large percentage of students start out on programs that sound great from the sales literature, but which gets us a career that is of no interest. Speak to a selection of university graduates for examples.

Spend some time thinking about what you want to earn and how ambitious you are. This can often control what particular qualifications you’ll need to attain and how much effort you’ll have to give in return.

Our recommendation would be to look for advice and guidance from a skilled advisor before settling on a particular study course, so there’s little doubt that the specific package will give the skills for the job being sought.

Watch out that all accreditations you’re considering doing will be recognised by employers and are current. The ‘in-house’ certifications provided by many companies are generally useless.

The top IT companies such as Microsoft, Adobe, CompTIA or Cisco each have widely renowned proficiency programs. These heavyweights will make sure you’re employable.

Commencing from the idea that it makes sense to home-in on the market that sounds most inviting first, before we can even ponder what development program would meet that requirement, how do we decide on the correct route?

As without any commercial background in IT, how could any of us be expected to understand what someone in a particular job does?

Consideration of many points is essential when you want to get to the right answer for you:

* The sort of individual you reckon you are - the tasks that you get enjoyment from, and on the other side of the coin - what makes you unhappy.

* Why you want to consider moving into Information Technology - is it to overcome a life-long goal like working for yourself for instance.

* Is salary further up on your list of priorities than some other areas.

* Many students don’t properly consider the amount of work needed to attain their desired level.

* You should also think long and hard about the amount of time and effort you’re going to invest in gaining your certifications.

To cut through the confusing industry jargon, and discover the most viable option for your success, have an informal meeting with an industry expert and advisor; a person that will cover the commercial realities and truth and of course each qualification.
